Most significant changes The King Ranch trim level, which slots just below the range-topping Platinum, returns to lineup for 2020; FordPass Connect and Ford Co-Pilot360 now standard on all models Price change Up $330 to $1,020, depending on trim On sale Now Which should you buy, 2019 or 2020? 2019 if you find a model with optional automatic emergency braking, which Ford included with a Driver Assistance Package; 2020 if not, as the critical safety feature is now standard Ford’s lineup for the Expedition full-size SUV expands for 2020 with the return of the King Ranch model for regular-length and Expedition Max extended-length body styles. Importantly, automatic emergency braking and a slew of other safety and driver assist features are now standard, not optional. Related These 10 SUVs Have the Highest Towing Capacity for 2019 Last offered for the 2017 model year, the King Ranch comes with 22-inch aluminum wheels, gray exterior accents, leather seats and leather-wrapped interior pieces, and a slew of King Ranch logos inside and out. With prices including destination starting at $74,290 for a rear-drive model, the King Ranch slots between the Limited and top-of-the-line Platinum, though it’s much closer to the latter. At inches overall, the Expedition Max is about a foot longer that the regular-length model. Passenger volume is the same, but the Max has 78 percent more cargo space behind the third row, by Ford’s estimation. All models come with standard seating for eight, a 375-horsepower, turbocharged V-6 and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional. Second-row bucket seats are available for seven-passenger seating. For 2020, all models come standard with Ford Co-Pilot360, which includes automatic emergency braking plus lane-keeping assist and blind spot warning with pedestrian detection among its features. FordPass Connect, which includes a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot, also is standard. Previously, such features were optional on the 2019 Expedition. More From Which Cars Fit Three Car Seats? Ford Makes FordPass Connect Remote Vehicle Services Free Which 2019 Three-Row SUVs Offer Captain’s Chairs? AWD Vs. 4WD What’s the Difference? Ford has proven that big SUVs like the Expedition and full-size pickups like the F-150 don’t need a V-8 engine. The turbo V-6 delivers ample acceleration and impressive towing capability up to 9,300 pounds. The Expedition also has ample room for up to eight people, and even the third row is tolerable for adults. In addition, the third row in most models offers a power-folding feature that makes it easy to store when you need more cargo space. The Expedition competes with large, truck-based SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia. The Expedition runs at the head of the class for full-size SUVs, but all that room and all those convenience features come at a high price A rear-drive XLT model starts north of $54,000 with destination, while a 4WD Max Platinum is more than $81,000. XL $53,025 XLT $55,835 Limited $66,375 King Ranch $75,590 Platinum $76,965 Wondering which trim is right for you? Our 2020 Ford Expedition Max trim comparison will help you decide. King Ranch version joins lineup Full-size SUV seats up to eight in three rows Twin-turbo V-6 engine standard Regular- and extended-length Max versions Rear- or four-wheel drive Automatic emergency braking standard 2020 Ford Expedition Max review Our expert's take What Is the 2020 Ford Expedition? Offered in regular- and extended-length Max form, the Ford Expedition full-size SUV seats up to eight people in three rows. The Expedition is powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that makes 375 or 400 horsepower depending on the trim level. The V-6 teams with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and rear- and four-wheel-drive models are offered. Competitors include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada. What’s New on the 2020 Ford Expedition? Standard Ford Co-Pilot360 includes automatic high-beam headlights, blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hot spot for up to 10 devices is also standard. A new King Ranch trim level inspired by the famous Texas ranch includes gray exterior accents, power running boards, 22-inch aluminum wheels, King Ranch badges and Del Rio leather. Meanwhile, the high-end Platinum trim gets new 22-inch wheels and a leather-wrapped instrument panel hood. What Features in the 2020 Ford Expedition Are Most Important? While seating for eight is standard, the Expedition offers second-row bucket seats that reduce seating capacity to seven but make it easier to access the third row. A power-folding third-row seat is standard. When equipped with four-wheel drive, there’s a Terrain Management System and hill descent control. Available Pro Trailer Backup Assist aims to make reversing with a trailer less of a white-knuckled task. Ford’s Sync 3 multimedia system is standard and features an 8-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Available convenience features include a hands-free foot-activated power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a panoramic moonroof and wireless device charging. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality is optional. 2020 Ford Expedition Vs. 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe How Do They Compare? Both SUVs have three rows of seats, but while the Expedition can seat up to eight, certain versions of the Tahoe have room for nine people. The Expedition’s maximum trailering capacity is a bit higher than the Tahoe’s, and the Expedition is the more practical of the two in everyday use, with more cargo room and a much more usable third-row seat. The Ford is also better to drive, though it’s possible that the redesigned 2021 Tahoe could close the gap. Should I Buy the 2020 Ford Expedition? The Expedition has plenty of capability — it’ll tow up to 9,300 pounds when properly equipped — and it offers lots of tech features. It’s roomy, rides well and has a powerful drivetrain. It’s pricey and towing disproportionately drags down fuel economy, but the Expedition is an impressive full-size SUV overall. Show full review ONE SICK BLACK BEAUTY November 19, 2022 By Preacher from Kearns, Utah Owns this car Bought my Ford Expedition Max last July 2021 it had 28,000 miles. Not long after noticed transmission slipping. Took it to Larry H Miller Super Ford in Salt Lake City they try to convince me the vehicle was designed to act like that. Took my car to Tranmission Specialist West Valley City. They went for a test drive with me and in 15 minutes the specialist knew the problem. The problem was called neutralizing. The transmission was going into neutral at anytime. June 2022 Ford realized I was right all along. Ford finally replaced my transmission. One week later an image of a wrench came on my dash. The left side of my Turbo went out. Ford replaced the part and one week later the right side TurboTax went out. Since then I have had numerous problems electrical with my Ford. This is November 18th, 2022 and my Ford is in the Dealership with 23 bad codes. It is the beginning of the winter season in Salt Lake City, Utah and again I an losing money because not o ly do I drive for Lyft and Uber I have Amen Limousine. On a full day I can make $300 to $400. Bad part is also I can't get a rental vehicle. I am going to keep researching to find out if customers have had the same issues. Show full review disppointing October 17, 2022 By Dan from Woburn, MA Owns this car It's a nice car, spacious 7 seater with a lot of technology, however, issues started before our first oil change, 22k miles later and less than a year continmued to drive with a passenger door not latching unless hard slammed, the interior chrome wrapping is starting to bubble, rear defrost weld came off, wipper arm discconected, rear wiper accessory fell off and the acceleration is getting worst. Dealership told me nothing is covered under warranty, Contacted Ford and after they've requested a few personal info, they went silent. Two dealers are asking me to pay for repairs.
